Chinatown’s seafood game is a sprawl, and that’s exactly why you need a map. Skip the tourist traps and follow the locals to spots like Dahing Seafood Market, where the live fish still taste like the harbor, or upstate craft beer & oyster bar, where the whiskey cake somehow outshines the bivalves.

We’ve got everything from Jiang Nan NYC’s flawless Peking duck to Aqua Best’s grab-and-go live crabs, and we ranked it all so you don’t have to gamble on a Tuesday night. One bite of Cervo’s prawns and you’ll forget the line outside.

Dive in.

Effortless even on New Year's Eve
Peking duck with ample pancakes
Stellar craft cocktails and service
Standout kung pao and sides
Best meal of our trip

From the moment we slipped in on New Year’s Eve, Jiang Nan NYC made everything look effortless, even when the rest of the city was in chaos. The Peking duck arrived with so many pancakes I actually lost count, each wrapper warm and pliable, ready for that crisp skin and hoisin. But the real surprise was the kung pao, which packed a gentle heat and a serious crunch, and the sides that kept coming like they knew we wanted more. The craft cocktails were stellar, the service even better, and by the end, I had to admit this was the best meal of our entire trip. It simply had everything.

Fried squid is a must-try
Quick seating despite long queues

Ping understands that when you walk in with a big group, you want food fast and you want it good. The long queues outside melted away quicker than I expected, and once seated, the dim sum recommendations from the staff were spot-on. Those savory egg tarts, with their impossibly flaky shells and warm, custardy centers, practically dissolved on my tongue. Then came the fried squid, which was so tender and lightly battered that I almost ordered a second plate. Service moved like a well-oiled machine, and I left wondering why every bustling dim sum hall couldn’t run this smoothly. Quick, kind, and utterly delicious.

Cervo’s is small, intimate, and completely unassuming, but the flavors are anything but shy. The oysters arrived perfectly briny, a little taste of the ocean that made me close my eyes for a second. Then came the spicy mussels, which packed such a bold punch that I had to pause and appreciate the audacity. But the prawns, oh, the prawns stole the entire show, sweet and succulent, with a char that made every bite feel like a celebration. The space is cozy, so expect to sit close to your neighbors, but that only added to the warm, energetic buzz. I left with a full heart and a satisfied stomach.

Aqua Best NYC LLC is not a restaurant, but it might be the best kept secret for anyone who loves cooking seafood at home. The family behind the counter are incredibly knowledgeable, and they’ll help you pick the perfect live crab or fish without any pretension. The prices feel like retail, but the quality is firmly restaurant-grade, which is a rare combo. I was in and out in under ten minutes, and that was with a quick chat about how to handle the live lobster I grabbed on a whim. They even accept SNAP EBT for seafood, which is a thoughtful touch. If you want freshness without the markup, this is your spot.

Oysters from both coasts
Fantastic burrata and halibut
Attentive, generous service
Pleasant outdoor lunch seating
Fresh ingredients, solid crudo

The Clam manages to make outdoor lunch feel like a little escape, with pleasant seating and a menu that sings. The oysters come from both coasts, which means you can compare the brininess of the East with the creaminess of the West, and that’s a fun game. But the real joy was the burrata, which was so creamy and fresh it felt like a dream, and the halibut, cooked with a gentle hand that kept it flaky and moist. The service was attentive without hovering, and the crudo was solid, bright with citrus and herbs. I could have stayed all afternoon, but the food disappeared too quickly. Go for the oysters, stay for the patio.

The grilled oysters were a close second, smoky and buttery, and I could have eaten a dozen more. The smoked whitefish crudite was a delightful surprise, and the tuna tartare was utterly delicious, fresh and zesty. The service came with genuine warmth, making the whole meal feel like a hug. Mictlan México and Spanish cuisine pulls off a rare trick: it makes both Mexican and Spanish seafood feel equally authentic, and that’s no small feat. The ceviche with scallops on watermelon was a transporting dish, bright, juicy, and unexpectedly harmonious. Then the langostinos in olive oil and salt arrived, and I nearly wept, they were that simple and that perfect. The vibe is welcoming, with a happy hour that’s reasonable enough to keep you there longer than planned. Every bite felt like a little trip, and I mean that in the best way. If you want bold flavors without the fuss, this is your place.

Dorlan’s Tavern & Oyster Bar might be the best bar in the seaport, and that’s saying something. The happy hour tacos are epic, little pockets of joy that disappear faster than you can order another round. The double patty burger is absolutely delicious, messy in the best way, with a juicy patty that holds its own against the toppings. There’s plenty of beer on tap, which pairs perfectly with the outdoor seating that’s ideal for people-watching. The vibe is relaxed and playful, like a neighborhood spot that knows exactly what it wants to be. I came for the oysters, but I stayed for the burger and the sunshine.

Exceptional oyster happy hour
Freshness without a freezer

Worth it for oysters alone

upstate craft beer & oyster bar has one of those happy hours that makes you rearrange your entire afternoon. The oysters were exceptional, briny and cold, with a freshness that tasted like they had never seen a freezer, which is exactly what I want from a place that calls itself an oyster bar. Pair them with a draft beer and you’ve got the best deal in Chinatown, hands down. The whiskey cake dessert was a first-rate finish, dense, boozy, and just sweet enough. Honestly, I’d come here for the oysters alone, but the beer selection and the cozy, unpretentious vibe make it an easy repeat visit.

It’s always bustling with folks who clearly know exactly what they’re doing, and the friendly staff are happy to point you toward the day’s best catch. I came for jumbo shrimp and left with a bag of whiting fish that turned out to be the standout of my week. Everything is live and swimming, which means you can see the freshness before you even ask. For anyone who cooks seafood at home, this is your go-to, no questions asked.
